It's not the five sided vert (=pole) that's bugging you right now. In flat surfaces they won't bother you. They could bother when your surface is curved.
The problem here is that your mesh doesn't have the right layout.
The right way (in my experience) to give a cube smooth edges (a bevel) is this:
This is the basic layout for all smooth edges, with this principle, you can practically make every mechanical object you want.
Building on this principle we can make this:
Notice how the basic layout is always the same. You use edges near the sides of the surface to keep the bevel in control.
A more practical example to show that it really works:
You see that all around the outer rims of the surface the edges come close to contain the bevel? Would I not do that, the surface wouldn't have that sexy tight bevel making it shine and sparkle!
If you use this principle, the bevel is always contained between the three edges forming the bevel.
